The ultimate moving day checklist for Gauteng homes

Moving houses is one of life’s top stressors — right up there with getting married and starting a new job. But with a bit of planning, moving day can actually go smoothly. Here’s the checklist we give to every new Rois Movers customer.

Four weeks before the move

This is the “declutter and decide” phase.

• Sort every room into keep / donate / sell / bin.
• Get a written quote from at least two movers. A fixed-price quote (like ours) removes the risk of surprise charges on the day.
• Book your move date. Weekends and end-of-month fill up fast — especially in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
• Notify your landlord or update your transfer date with the attorneys.

Two weeks before

• Order boxes — or ask us to drop some off when we deliver our quote.
• Update your address with banks, medical aid, SARS and your employer.
• Redirect your mail with the Post Office online form.
• Start packing items you rarely use — books, out-of-season clothes, decor.

One week before

• Pack a “first-night” box — bedding, phone chargers, kettle, toilet paper, toiletries, a change of clothes.
• Defrost and empty the fridge 24 hours before.
• Disassemble beds and large furniture (or ask our crew to handle it as an add-on).
• Confirm your booking with the moving company and double-check the arrival window.

Moving day

• Be awake and caffeinated before the truck arrives.
• Walk the crew through the house so they know what’s going and what’s staying.
• Keep valuables, documents and the first-night box with you.
• Do a final walkthrough — check cupboards, the garden shed, the geyser cupboard.

After you’ve unpacked

• Update your address on Google, your insurance and your vehicle licence.
• Test the alarm, geyser and stove at the new place.
